My Art

Just like my photography, I get inspired by the natural world and the animals that occupy it. I try to capture the spirit of the subject in my drawings, and to recreate the natural wonder of these majestic creatures. I usually enjoy drawing big cats, but from time to time I do branch out and explore different techniques with different species, such as birds and reptiles.

I started out by drawing animals with coloured pencils, but then discovered chalk pastels. I love how you can apply multiple layers and recreate fur realistically by applying highlights.

I am beginning to experiment with acrylic paint. I have completed two pieces, but am working on a third with a few others in mind for the future.

Commissions

I am now offering commissions to the public!

I have started taking commissions from friends and family members, and am now opening them up to the public as well!

I have completed many commissions of different pets and in each drawing I try to capture their spirit. Whether they’re a kind and gentle soul, or a bit of a mischievous troublemaker, I try to let their unique personalities shine through.

Both of these drawings were made using chalk pastels on a pastelmat

Unsure whether to get a chalk pastel or an acrylic paint portrait?

Both medium in my opinion are very effective and have a high-quality finish, but they do have their differences. For example, chalk pastels are much quicker to draw with and require less layers, whereas acrylic paints take a lot longer to complete because of the time spent waiting for the paint to dry properly. In my opinion, the colours of the subject are more true in acrylic paints because you can mix the colours much more, but chalk pastel still works great, it’s only a marginal difference. And with chalk pastels, I feel like the individual hairs of fur look more realistic than acrylic because you can vary the pressure of the pencil more to create different thicknesses.

The reason my acrylic paintings cost a bit more is because of how expensive the materials are to buy and how much I get through. And also because I tend to find painting is more time consuming than drawing with pastels.

How to book a commission

1: Choose your size, medium and how many pets will be on your portrait                   Chose from either chalk pastel which comes in A4 size, or acrylic paint which comes in either A4 or A3. And then if you would like one or two pets.

2: Email me with a photo of your pet.            The next step is to email me with a couple of photos of your pet/s (the more photos the better!). If you have a pose in mind you’d like your pet to be doing in the portrait but don’t have a photo, I’ll do my best to make your vision work!

3: I will send you a mock-up

Next I will put together your photo/photos into a mock-up of what your portrait could look like. Either in Photoshop or on paper. Let me know if you’re happy with it and if you are happy for me to get started.

4: Book your commission in the shop

Once you’re happy for me to get started, visit the shop and select the type of commission you’ve ordered. For example, A4 chalk pastel, single pet. Once you’ve “brought” the product, I can post your commission to you when it’s completed! Shortcut below the cat drawing.

4: I’ll get started on your portrait

Once you’ve approved the mockup, I’ll get started on your commission. I will send you message estimating on how long the portrait will take, depending on the medium, size and how busy I am. If you need the portrait by a certain time, please remember to book it far enough in advance since I could be busy with exams or other commissions!
